It wasn’t unusual for the backstage area to reek of paint or paint thinner or some other chemical that was used around the set.  Perfume and hairspray were also common, trailing the girls around as they ran with their shoes in their hands from one side of the stage to the other between cues.

 

But opening night, a different kind of smell was emanating from one of the dressing rooms, and it was one Bekki regretted being familiar with.  Her hair was already pinned up, her face was already painted to the tee, and she was more than ready to meander on stage all seductive in the lace slip she wore as a dress for most of the show.  Her already-laddered stockings had just gotten a brand new hole in the knee that made her look even more run-down and debauched, which was perfect.

 

She really didn’t want to be smelling what she did.

 

But she knocked on the door, and there was Allen, who played Jackie, and Risa who was Nadine, Gretchen who was Madeleine, Victor and Mike, who were the Brothers d’Armano, sharing a spliff.

 

“At the risk of sounding like a narc,” she muttered, shutting the door loudly to announce her presence, “You guys are idiots for smoking dope on opening night.”

This is the show I'm in rehearsals for.  It's running from August 29 to September 20 at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY.

This is more or less what it looks like, so if you're into 1920s-style debauchery set to jaunty, raunchy jazz with a big helping of electric guitar, it just might be the show for you.

I'm playing Ellie, who is in the ensemble, but I'm understudying Kate (a semi-reformed hooker) and Madelaine (a lesbian).  So on the off-chance I get to go on and strut my stuff, I will undoubtedly pimp it out like crazy.
